Taps with or without drain
We are used to seeing sink taps with pop-up drain and built-in drain but there are also other solutions!
Pop-up drain, click clack drain, free drain drain. The world of taps is often complex and characterized by terms and expressions that are not very clear and immediate.
If you don't have an expert to turn to, changing your basin mixer can be a real headache.
Mixers with and without drain
Let's start with simple things: the "normal" sink tap that we have all had in our homes is the one with a drain that has (usually in the rear part of the mixer body) a lever to open or close the sink drain.
It is a system that is now taken for granted because we are all used to seeing it: in all cases where it is necessary to collect the water in the basin of the sink, it will be sufficient to lower the lever to close the cap of the drain and open the water to reach the desired level.
The classic Ideal Standard faucets that we have all had in our homes or those of our parents are equipped with pop-up waste systems.
Then there are the mixers without drain that are increasingly popular: in this case there is no built-in lever or drain to collect the water in the sink and there is in fact no connection between the mixer and the drain.
If the sink drain is of the click clack type (closing and opening by pressure) or with free drainage, it is necessary to choose a tap without a drain.
Washbasins without overflow and click clack waste
In most cases, a mixer without a drain is chosen when the washbasin does not have an overflow hole.
But what exactly is the overflow?
A classic ceramic sink has a hole in the ceramic at the top (there were even 3 holes in the vintage models) which has the purpose of allowing the water to drain once it reaches an excessive level to prevent it from overflowing and flooding the entire bathroom.
However, many modern washbasins no longer have the overflow hole both for aesthetic and design reasons, and because the overflow hole is rather complicated to keep clean.
Countertop washbasins, for example, almost never have an overflow hole.
In combination with a bowl-mounted washbasin, for example, it is possible to combine a wall-mounted mixer (always sold without drain valve) and a click clack drain that can be in the same finish as the mixer, or with a ceramic cover in the same color as the sink (if the sink allows it).
One of the best-selling wall-mounted washbasin mixers is the Ideal Standard Connect Air model, available in 4 different finishes and characterized by two separate plates for an extremely elegant and refined appearance.
